| January 2004 - Part 3 Warp Pylons and Bridge Dome
The Warp Pylons have proven to be one of the more troublesome aspects of this kit. In the studio miniature, which I'm trying to emulate, there are channels running along the leading and trailing edges of the pylons. The kit parts left very little in the way of a channel, and my overly zealous sanding has removed what little ERTL left me. I had to come up with a way to correct this. First, I glued strips of 0.10 styrene along the leading and trailing edges. These were then sanded to blend with the curvature of the pylon. Also the pylons were too thin, so strip styrene was added to beef up the structures. Along the leading and trailing edges, a piece of siding will be added for detail The vent details in the pylons were flattened by sanding, so I've replaced them with Evergreen siding. Bridge Deck The pylons have taken about four days of work, so it was nice to move on to fitting the B/C deck from DLM. The original part was removed, leaving a hole that was too wide for the replacement. I built up a supporting ring and have blended it to the surface with Magic Sculpt. The Officers Lounge by DLM is going behind the windows. The impluse deck ring sat too high, so I sawed it off and lowered it to the coorect depth. The blue crystal, which will be lit by a white LED from beneath was fitted as well.
